Welcome to this learning programme that will lead the learner to a greater understanding of applying leadership concepts in a work context.

Intended Audience
This learning programme is intended for all persons who need to apply leadership concepts in a work context. This Unit Standard will be useful to learners, working in all sectors of the economy, community organisations or Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs). It will enable learners to gain insight into the role of leadership within a work context, and thus providing them with the skills and knowledge to add value to their job. This Unit Standard is intended for junior managers of organisations.
Programme Outcomes
In this learning programme, we will be covering the following learning outcomes:
Module 1: Explain the concept of leadership |
Module 2: Differentiate between the concepts of leadership and management |
· Identify and explain various definitions of leadership with examples · Explain the roles and qualities of a leader using examples |
· Differentiate the concepts of leadership and management using examples · Explain the circumstances when a team leader manages and leads with examples from the work context |
Module 3: Apply leadership techniques to individuals and teams within the work context |
Module 4: Evaluate the impact of the leadership techniques applied |
· Identify various theories of leadership according to theory and practice · Diagnose the leadership approach of the team according to individual needs and organisational requirements · Implement leadership techniques in order to improve group dynamics and achieve objectives |
· Measure the impact of leadership techniques against organisational requirements · Evaluate the effectiveness of the techniques against theory and practice · Take corrective actions, where appropriate, to improve the effectiveness of the individual or team |
Programme entry level requirements
It is assumed that people learning towards this Unit Standard are already competent in:
- Communication and Mathematical Literacy at NQF Level 3
During the workshop the learner will complete a number of class activities that will form part of his/her formative assessment. In this the learner has the opportunity to practice and explore new skills in a safe environment. The learner should take the opportunity to gather as much information as he/she can to use during his/her workplace learning and self-study.
The workshop will be followed by summative assessment tasks to be completed through self-study in your workplace. In some cases, the learner may be required to do research and complete the tasks in his/her own time.
