The recently published 104 page book "Employee Volunteering in South Africa” is an excellent guide on the setting up of an Employer Supported Volunteering Programme.

Published in November of 2007, it has a wide range of contributions from practitioners in the field and highlights the what, why and how of employee volunteering, as well as the South African experience. It is both a practical and theoretical guide.

The book focuses on the business case for employee volunteering dealing with issues such as reputation management, motivation, staff development, staff retention, and the key element of engaging the second economy.

Secondly, the book focuses on the South African experience describing a number of "case studies" on volunteering programmes in both the corporate and the NGO sector. In particular, the issue of BBBEE scorecard compliance, different types of volunteering, setting up a volunteering programme, managing and coordinating volunteers, and ensuring success and sustainability are dealt with at length.

The book contains a number of useful policy and measurement guidelines which will help the reader establish, and measure the impact of, an employee volunteering initiative.

Finally, it directs the reader to a downloadable Employee Volunteering Toolkit containing a step-by-step guide on how to set up an employee volunteering program in your own business.
